BHT (Butylated Hydroxytoluene) is an antioxidant, white crystalline powder that will delay the rancidity (auto-oxidation) of oils and fats (mainly containing polyunsaturated fatty acids) in food and personal care applications. It scavenges free oxygen radicals preventing oxidation inside the product (fat-stabilizer) and skin cell membranes and DNA after application. In addition, Butylated Hydroxytoluene extends the shelf-life of oil-based formulations, preventing deterioration. It is also used to stabilize color, odor, texture, etc. cosmetics by stabilizing the colorants used in them.
It improves the antioxidant properties of another ingredient, exhibiting good synergism and potentiation of action. When used with chelating agents di- or tetrasodium EDTA, BHT works better, preventing the tendency of products to become yellow.
Butylated Hydroxytoluene is added as a preservative in skin care products and cosmetic products as it contains potent antioxidants that prevent the deterioration of formulas due to reactions of other ingredients with oxygen. These antioxidants act by obstructing the multiplication of peroxy radicals.
Use: Butylated Hydroxytoluene should be added when the formula is in the fat phase, and the typical use level can be between 0.01 to 0.1%. For best results, combine it with EDTA. For external use only.
