Kojic acid is made from several different types of fungi, especially Aspergillus oryzae, which has the Japanese common name koji. Kojic acid is a by-product in the fermentation process of malting rice, for use in the manufacturing of sake, the Japanese rice wine.
Kojic acid promotes skin lightening and helps establishing an even skin tone on all skin types. It can be combined with other skin lighteners.
Easy to chelate with metal ions resulting in color change (yellow or brown).
