Lactic acid is a chemical exfoliant that is derived from the fermentation of lactose, a carbohydrate found in milk. It is a widely used ingredient in numerous skincare products, and its usage dates back to ancient Egypt. It is produced by a fermentation process using cornstarch or beet sugar. Lactic Acid belongs to the alpha hydroxy acid (AHA) family, that comprises of water-soluble organic compounds and belongs to the alpha-hydroxy acid (AHAs) class of anti-ageing compounds. Lactic acid is also often used as a milder alternative to glycolic acid in cosmetic formulations. Besides significantly improving the appearance of the skin, Lactic Acid helps keep it naturally hydrated. It increases cell turnover and helps eliminate accumulated dead skin cells on the epidermis. Lactic acid can also be used as a pH adjuster.
Please be aware that when you use Alpha Hydroxy Acid’s on the skin you are exposing new skin, which is much more susceptible to UV damage. Always follow with an adequate sunscreen.
COSMETIC BENEFITS OF LACTIC ACID:
- Our lactic acid is used to treat hyperpigmentation, age spots, and other conditions that contribute to a dull, uneven complexion.
- It also enhances skin tone and minimises the appearance of pores.
- It promotes cell turnover and cell renewal, which are the processes through which your skin loses old cells and replaces them with new ones.
- It works really well for sensitive skin because of its milder nature as compared to other alpha-hydroxy acids.
- Lactic acid is also a key component of over-the-counter lotions and creams for “chicken skin,” i.e., pimples on the backs of the arms. Lactic acid aids in the dissolution of the clog of skin cells that form around the hair follicle, smoothing out the bumpiness.
- It is commonly found in topical therapies for eczema, psoriasis, and rosacea.
