Salicylic Acid is a beta hydroxy acid found in many plants but its most well-known source is White Willow or Salix alba from which its name is derived. Its a natural pure substance with proven effectiveness against inflammations and dandruff and suitable for various applications like dermatological care, anti-acne, as well as various skin problems, such as warts, black heads, bumps, hair care. It has antimicrobial properties, exfoliating and moisturizing functions.
It is also commonly used in dandruff shampoos, this is because of the acid’s ability to cause skin cells to slough off, facilitating new skin cell growth, unclogging pores and removing overgrown skin cells.
Typically, it is added to the water phase of formulas but it is very poorly water-soluble and will need to be dissolved in a suitable solvent such as ethanol or propylene glycol before incorporating it into your formulations. If used at concentrations higher than 2%, propylene glycol should be used as solvent.
